Natural Fabrics: What Your Clothes Are Actually Made Of

Turn a shirt inside out and read the tag. Polyester, nylon, acrylic, spandex, and elastane are all plastics — petroleum-derived synthetics spun into thread. Industry estimates put synthetics at roughly two-thirds of global fiber production, a share that has climbed steadily for decades.

This isn't automatically a problem. Synthetics are cheap, durable, and genuinely better for certain uses. But the shift happened largely without most shoppers noticing, and it carries tradeoffs worth understanding.

The Natural Fibers

Cotton is the most familiar. Breathable, soft, washable, and comfortable across a wide temperature range. Conventional cotton is also a pesticide-intensive and water-intensive crop, which is the main argument for organic cotton — grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, and certified under standards like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).

Linen, made from flax, is one of the oldest textiles in use. Flax needs considerably less water and fewer inputs than cotton and grows well in poorer soil. Linen is highly breathable and gets softer with washing — which is why it endures in hot, humid climates like this one. It wrinkles readily, which is either a flaw or a feature depending on your view.

Hemp grows quickly, needs little water, and generally requires minimal pesticide. The resulting fabric is strong and durable, softening over time. Regulatory restrictions long suppressed hemp cultivation in the United States; the 2018 Farm Bill changed that, and domestic production has been rebuilding since.

Wool is naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking, and odor-resistant — properties synthetic performance fabrics spend considerable engineering effort trying to imitate. Wool quality and animal welfare practices vary widely between producers, so sourcing matters.

Silk is protein fiber produced by silkworms. Strong, lightweight, temperature-regulating. Conventional production kills the pupae; peace silk or ahimsa silk allows the moth to emerge first, at higher cost and with a shorter fiber.

Tencel/Lyocell occupies a middle ground. It's made from wood pulp, so the raw material is plant-based, but it's chemically processed into fiber. What distinguishes lyocell is a closed-loop production process that recovers and reuses the majority of its solvent. Viscose and rayon are made from similar raw material with considerably messier chemistry.

The Microfiber Question

The most-discussed environmental issue with synthetics is microfiber shedding. Every wash cycle releases tiny plastic fragments from synthetic garments. Wastewater treatment plants capture some but not all, and the remainder enters waterways.

Research on this is still developing, and it's worth being precise about what's established versus what isn't. That synthetic textiles shed microfibers in the wash is well documented. That microplastics are now widespread in water, soil, and food chains is well documented. What remains genuinely uncertain is the scale of human health impact — that research is active and not settled. Anyone telling you the health consequences are definitively known, in either direction, is ahead of the evidence.

For a coastal community, the water pathway is the concrete part. Filters designed to capture microfibers in the wash, and simply washing synthetics less often, are the practical responses available now.

Where Synthetics Still Make Sense

An honest treatment has to acknowledge this. Technical outdoor gear, rain shells, and certain athletic equipment genuinely perform better in synthetics. Recycled polyester keeps existing plastic in use, though it still sheds. A small percentage of elastane in an otherwise natural fabric adds stretch and can extend a garment's usable life by improving fit retention.

The useful frame isn't natural good, synthetic bad. It's matching the fiber to the use, and noticing when a synthetic has been substituted purely on cost with no performance benefit to you.

Reading a Label

A few practical habits:

Check the fiber content tag, not the marketing. Eco, conscious, and green are unregulated terms. The fiber content tag is legally required and factual.

Watch for blends. A cotton-polyester blend is partly plastic and sheds accordingly. Blends are also substantially harder to recycle than single-fiber garments.

Look for real certifications. GOTS for organic textiles, OEKO-TEX for chemical safety testing, Responsible Wool Standard for wool. These are auditable; vague on-label claims are not.

Buy fewer, better garments. The environmental math of clothing is dominated by volume. A natural-fiber garment worn a hundred times outperforms five worn ten times each, whatever they're made of.

Consider secondhand. The lowest-impact garment is almost always one that already exists.
